Technical Writer (Scientific Writing) Intern
General Summary
As Southern Research launches new research directions and scientific capabilities, we are providing this exciting Technical Writer internship opportunity to be part of the Catalyst Team in the Data Science group. This internship can either be on the Birmingham, AL campus or remote. Catalyst is a precision medicine program that aims to translate research into innovation by designing and implementing a clinicogenomics data platform that brings together clinical data from primary care physician (PCP) clinics and whole genome sequencing to improve patient outcomes in the management of chronic disease, Trainees will write, edit and coordinate production of highly technical medical protocols and other materials; retrieve data from databases and other internal/external data sources for the generation of reports; write research-orientated grants, articles, and conference presentations. Moreover, through the mentorship of experts and interaction with internal/external collaborators in protocol writing, manuscript/grant preparation, data abstraction and reporting, the trainee will expand their professional network and learn aspects of the multifaceted heath research ecosystem.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Protocol Writing
Assists the Principal Investigator(s) with developing, writing, and editing protocol documents for clinical trials, including letters of intent (LOI), informed consent, patient education/materials, IRB forms. Works collaboratively with researchers as well as administrative and regulatory staff to develop and coordinate the development of the study design and protocol. Reviews the entire protocol document for content, consistency, clarity, formatting, and grammar to ensure a submission-ready document.
Grant and Manuscript Preparation
Researches submission guidelines from funding organizations and journals; formats text and graphics to comply with organization guidelines.Prepares supplemental documents as needed (letters of support, public abstracts, etc.). Coordinates submissions to funding agencies and journals (gathers author disclosures, follows up on acceptances/revisions).
Proofreads grant application and manuscripts nearing submission and/or going through revision.
Data Abstraction and Reporting
Abstracts medical and scientific information and provide lay language versions when required. Reviews deidentified clinical records to extract data points. Compiles, writes, and submits project results to Principal Investigator(s) and research team. Compiles information and drafts presentations to provide the most effective arrangement of data (financial, scientific, medical, business, and academic).
Write for Technical and Lay Audiences
Writes and edits scientific research proposals, grants, and reports at the direction of the Principal Investigator(s) and research team. Gathers information from subject matter experts to assist in writing content. Revises scientific and technical writing for usage and clarity with target audience in mind. Organizes, interprets, and presents scientific information in a clear and concise manner.
Requirements/Minimum Qualifications
Students in B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. program in English, Technical/ Professional Writing, or Scientific related field.
Training Plan
  • First week: Learn basic knowledge of past and current clinicogenomic data collection research programs; such as: AllofUs, eMERGE, and AGHI; and compare/contrast with Catalyst Program data collection workflows and study goals.
  • Second week: Familiarity with internal and external collaborators, vendors, and PCP clinical data EMR/EHR sources, biospecimen repository and processing, clinical genome sequencing and results, clinicogenomic data models and workflows
  • Week 3-12: Contribute to protocol writing, grant and manuscript preparation, and data abstraction and reporting.
